Recognizing the demands of employers, in addition to knowledge, students need to equip themselves with essential skills to easily secure stable employment. For this reason, our Economic Law Club promptly prepared a consecutive skills development series entitled “The Journey of Personal Development,” divided into phases with the aim of equipping students with necessary skills. Acknowledging the importance of “Public Speaking Skills,” the Economic Law Club launched the first phase of the series, “The Journey of Personal Development – Phase 1,” with the desire to help students who feel hesitant or shy when speaking in front of others gradually improve and become more confident in communication and in their future careers. On Saturday afternoon, 15 April 2023, at Room D105, Campus 2, Lac Hong University, the Club session was successfully held, receiving enthusiastic participation from Economic Law students and insightful sharing from MB Ngo Thi Kim Anh – Advisor of the Economic Law Club – and Mr. Nguyen Van Ry – Club President.
The programme took place in an enthusiastic atmosphere, beginning with a Blooket game under the motto “Play and receive gifts,” combined with a heartfelt musical performance by two first-year students, which energized the entire auditorium. However, one of the key factors contributing to the programme’s success was the sharing from the two speakers. First, MB Ngo Thi Kim Anh shared her personal experiences over many years, confiding in students about expressing personal viewpoints in public and the challenges she had faced while striving to become a university lecturer as she is today. Through her sharing, she conveyed a meaningful message: “Be confident, express your own opinions without hesitation or fear regarding any issue, because being able to speak up is essential for success.” Following her sharing, Mr. Ry spent time communicating and interacting with the audience. He recounted his journey from being fearful, reserved, and even trembling in front of others to becoming a confident and articulate speaker, eventually serving as a club president and standing before the audience as a speaker and companion. He also offered sincere advice and practical methods he had applied to overcome personal obstacles when facing an audience. Notably, he shared: “To be confident in front of a crowd, I think you should prepare thoroughly before presenting and practice speaking more often, while building a steady mindset for any possible situation.” In addition to sharing, he actively engaged with students, listening to their thoughts and answering questions. These interactions created an atmosphere resembling a friendly conversation among peers.
After the insightful sharing from the speakers, the programme moved to its main activity. Participating students had the opportunity to practice public speaking through debates on socially relevant topics encountered in everyday life. Personally, this was the most appealing part of the programme. Instead of merely attending and listening, students formed teams of three to discuss and debate assigned topics, present arguments, compete against opposing teams, and strive for victory. Each team, with its unique style and personality, contributed to a highly engaging and dynamic debate. This activity not only enhanced students’ speaking, critical thinking, and argument defense skills but also cultivated teamwork and cooperation in group discussions. The debate consisted of three rounds with six participating teams. With outstanding performances, three teams convincingly claimed victory, receiving applause and praise from the audience, along with valuable prizes from the Organizing Committee.
At the conclusion of the programme, the Organizing Committee received numerous positive feedback comments from participants. When asked about his experience, Hoang Kim – a first-year Economic Law student – shared: “I think this is a very meaningful programme. Not only did we get to speak, but we also received gifts. I hope the Club will organize more programmes like this so that more students can experience them, and I am looking forward to the next activity.” Many joyful moments followed the session, from the excitement of opening gift boxes to the happiness of students leaving with adorable prizes in hand, as well as the satisfaction of the Organizing Committee upon the successful completion of the event.
Through the practical activities of the programme, students were equipped with speaking, debating, and situational response skills. The session also fostered teamwork spirit and enhanced their ability to receive, filter, and search for information. Through this programme, we hope that students will make further progress in both their studies and careers, boldly face challenges, overcome fear when speaking before a crowd, confidently express their opinions, and gradually develop themselves toward the greater objectives the programme seeks to deliver. The Organizing Committee promises that Phase 2 will bring new colors, greater value, and additional skills, and will continue to accompany students on their journey toward achieving personal development goals.
