Promoting Traffic Law Awareness: Paving the Way for Safer Communities

As the Lunar New Year approaches, Lac Hong University (LHU) has launched an impactful campaign titled Safe Spring, Happy Tet to raise awareness about traffic laws among students and staff. This initiative not only encourages responsible behaviour on the roads but also aligns with global efforts to foster safer, more sustainable communities.

Understanding the New Traffic Regulations

Effective January 1, 2025, Decree 168/2024/ND-CP replaces the earlier Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP), introducing stricter penalties for traffic violations in Vietnam. The updated decree significantly increases administrative fines for common offences, particularly those often committed by students. Examples include:

  • Driving on sidewalks: Fines ranging from 4 to 6 million VND.

  • Reckless driving or performing dangerous stunts: Fines ranging from 8 to 10 million VND.

LHU’s campaign aims to educate students about these changes, reminding them to prioritize safety and use their resources, such as Tet bonuses and allowances, wisely.

Advocating for Responsible Behaviour

Through workshops, educational materials, and social media engagement, the university’s outreach program emphasizes the importance of compliance with traffic laws. By fostering awareness, LHU encourages students to act as exemplary citizens, contributing to safer roads and reducing the risks of accidents and penalties.

"Let us welcome the new year with joy and responsibility. Be the model youth who adheres to traffic laws," the campaign advocates.

Linking to the SDGs

LHU’s traffic law education initiative contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – By promoting road safety, the campaign aims to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by traffic accidents.

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Raising awareness of traffic laws contributes to safer urban environments and promotes responsible mobility.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Incorporating traffic law education into extracurricular activities ensures students gain practical knowledge and skills relevant to sustainable living.

  • Broader Impact on Sustainability

Beyond its immediate impact on campus, LHU’s initiative serves as a model for other institutions, showcasing how universities can lead in promoting sustainable practices. By equipping students with critical knowledge, the university empowers them to advocate for road safety within their communities. These efforts demonstrate LHU’s commitment to sustainability and societal well-being.

  • LHU’s campaign to educate students and staff on updated traffic laws reflects the institution’s dedication to fostering a responsible and safe environment. Through proactive engagement and alignment with the SDGs, the university underscores the importance of outreach in achieving sustainable development. Together, initiatives like these pave the way for safer and more harmonious communities.
